Coprophagia

Coprophagia as quoted by Wikipedia is "the consumption of feces, from the Greek κόπρος copros ("feces") and φαγεῖν phagein ("to eat"). Many animal species practice coprophagia as a matter of course; other species do not normally consume feces but may do so under unusual conditions. Coprophagy refers to many kind of feces eating including eating feces of other species (heterospecifics), other individuals (allocoprophagy), or its own (autocoprophagy), those once deposited or taken directly from the anus."

This past fall, Harvey, Norm, and I were walking up Mill Creek Canyon road.  Packs of snow were on either side of the road.  On our way down, Norm and I noticed Harvey wasn't nearby.  I look back and about a half mile up the road I see Harvey, clearly fixated on something with his mug in the snow.  I call him multiple times and no response, which was strange, because he's usually a good listener.  I continue to walk thinking he'll come when he's ready, but Norm gets more anxious that his brother is not coming.  Finally after no sign of Harvey, I turn back, walking at least a mile to Harvey, who is in the exact same spot.  He was eating poop!  Gross! Normally, as most people who know me know, I have a slight infatuation with poop.  Not that day! It was all over his face! I was mad! Furthermore, it took all my strength to drag him away from the pile.  And to think a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's mouth.  And to think they let him in the hospital!!

From time to time I catch Harvey eating frozen snacks in the back yard, but he's never had another incident like that one.  I wonder, is there a word for dogs who only eat frozen poop?

Apparently, Harvey's not alone:  (check out highlighted paragraph in the link below)
